Crew of USS Hanson
On October 15, 2005, the memorial service was held for our late author. His cousin, Ms. Mela Dicarlo, made a speech about his early years. She mentioned that the author had
joined the Navy at 17 or18 and had written some short stories while aboard USS Hanson.
USS Hanson? Where did I hear the name of this ship, I asked myself.
In MISCHIEF, the author tells the readers tragic cases of the aged people, most of them with Alzheimer’s disease、abandoned by their families, at a railway station, in a parking place or in a playground. They do not remember where or with whom they lived. As all the labels were cut out of their clothes, the police has difficulty to identity them. Then there is a clue that cannot be removed; Tattoos on the biceps of an old man’s arm, “WWII USS HANSON DD 832”.Cotton Hawes contacts with Navy’s Discharged Personnel Center and finds that the old man was a crew aboard USS HANSON. So it makes the man an old friend of the author.
