In chapter 10 of the novel ICE Eileen Burke is telling Bert Kling that she will act as a bait dressed in a nurse’s uniform. Some guy is raping nurses crossing a dark park on their way home from the Worth Memorial hospital. Eileen further tells Bert about some man she used to date “—he was an editor of a paperback house – he told me if you put the word nurse in a title, you are garanteed a million copy sale.”
Now, does that ring a bell? Well, in 1955 Fawcett Gold Medal Books published Richard Marsten’s novel MURDER IN THE NAVY and even if the novel must have sold a great deal owing to its jacket blurb “Susperb Suspence!, says Evan Hunter” it must have sold even better when Pocket Books thirteen years later republished Evan’s novel under the title DEATH OF A NURSE by Ed McBain! |
