From 'Mystery scene' Issue 29 - April 1991:
An interview with Evan Hunter: Some excerpts : Q: Do You You have a favorite 87th Precinct novel? A: I always tend to think that the most recent of the novels is the best, but I must admit to having a soft spot for "Ice", the one Newsweek Magazine chose as one of the best crime novels of the 20th century. Q: Have any of the 87th Precinct novels been based on true life crimes? A: Never. Q: Will we ever see an actual map of Isola and its burroughs? A: The Swedes have made a map of the Precinct, and so has a man named Akira Naoi- (we all know well now, don't we???)- in Japan, who has written several books about the Eight-Seven.You'll have to buy his latest book (but it's in Japanese) to get the key to it. Q: Whatever happened to Det. Carl Capek from 'Hail Hail, the Gang's all Here? A. Detective Carl who? Never heard of him. Are you sure he wasn't the Deaf Man in disguise, infiltrating in the squadroom? Got to watch out for the guy. Want to get more??? Just ask JP.....
